'KNOX WESTFIELD' - Knox, AUS
(see photos below)
The Knox Westfield mural project covers over 600 square meters of the new community engagement areas of the Westfield shopping complex, including two large exterior murals, gound level & mezzanine kids play area and second story rooftop Basketball area. The project was curated Ambush Gallery (Sydney) in partnership with Scentre Group Australia and the artwork was developed alongside designers from these teams to compliment the landscape planning and colour schemes.
The artworks for the new Active Kids Play areas at Westfield Knox are composed to compliment the usage and design of the spaces as well as compliment the surrounding backdrop of the Dandenong Ranges. The two levels of the play area and car park mural textures and colours are inspired by the natural layers of the Dandenong, moving from earthy reds and oranges into greens, then blues, as the eye line transitions upwards from earth, to trees and then to the sky. The shapes dividing these colours reference the eucalyptus tree bark patterns.
The ‘third' Basketball level wraps around two exterior walls which include inset bleachers, pillars and entrance ways. The predominantly blue palette references the sky layer and includes shapes and brushstroke elements inspired by urban textures such as torn bill posters and street art techniques. The overall intention of the artwork is to create an inviting, engaging and positive environment for play with a sense of movement and flow.
