David ‘MEGGS’ Hooke (b. 1978, Melbourne, Australia) is a mural, street and fine artist recognized for his large scale murals and detailed paintings that combine elements of nature, industry and abstraction to create imagery that evokes a sense of flowing movement and change. His art practice began as founding member of the EVERFRESH Studio (circa. 2003), which is now regarded as one of Australia’s most influential street art collectives, and he has since established himself as a professional mural and gallery artist with around 20 years experience in creating public art.
David’s expertise is in producing rich and colourful large scale murals which investigate and reflect the environment and culture of their surrounds. His work is heavily inspired by the raw elements of natural elements and the beauty found in small objects and references which together can tell a larger story.
The aim of his work is capture a vibrant energy, movement and flow within the piece which represents an overall feeling of constant change and growth.
From around 2014 to 2019 David relocated to the USA to pursue travel and career opportunities, spending the majority of his time living and working in Los Angeles, Detroit and Hilo (Hawai’i). Spending time working and traveling abroad provided him with a greater understanding of social diversity and the natural beauty of coastal places, in contrast to larger, industrialized cities. David co-founded ‘Temple Children’, a Hilo (Hawai’i) based artist residency and mural program, which assist artists in create public artworks or exhibitions and engage in cross cultural connections, indigenous teachings and sustainability awareness.
David has worked with various commercial clients, institutions and councils to produce public artworks that engage with their direct community as bringing life and energy to a public space. Many of these projects involve stages of client and community consultations to ensure best results. His most recent examples of this include working in partnership with The Social Crew and Gunaikurnai artist Alice Pepper to paint a collarborative large scale 35m long underpass in Nowa Nowa (VIC) as well as a multi level, multi surface, intergrated mural project for Westfield and the City of Knox (VIC).
Over the years David (MEGGS) has held numerous successful solo exhibitions (since 2007), most notably with Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne, Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles and White Walls Gallery in San Francisco.
