David ‘MEGGS’ Hooke (b. 1978, Melbourne, Australia) is a muralist, street and fine artist recognized for his large scale murals, detailed paintings and installations that explore and combine the duality of natural landscapes and urban decay with bold colour and abstraction. MEGGS has established himself as a professional mid-career street/mural, and gallery, artist with over 20 years experience in producing public artworks and exhibitions.

Over time MEGGS’ practice has evolved into a more profound affection for, and exploration of, natural landscapes (mostly coastal) as well as a meditation on mental health challenges (namely anxiety). His artwork explores a personal connection to the ocean, natural elements and environments, evoking a sense of constant movement and change, inspired by life cycles of growth and decay.

With a background in surf/skate culture and graphic design, David’s personal arts practice began circa 2003 in street art when he adopted the moniker ‘MEGGS’ and became a founding member of the well renowned ‘EVERFRESH Studio’, one of Australia’s most influential street art collectives. During the period of 2003-2010, MEGGS and his fellow Everfresh Studio members, produced many forms of street art, murals and DIY exhibitions, largely contributing to Melbourne’s recognition as one of the worlds ‘street art’ capitals.

From circa 2014 ~ 2019 MEGGS lived in the USA between Los Angeles, Detroit and Hilo (Hawai’i) to further explore and experience the contrasts between raw natural landscapes and industrial decay. Thus providing him with a greater understanding of the longer-term effects of consumerism, industrialisation and conservation that now inform his work. During this time MEGGS participated in multiple mural festivals, such as WorldWideWalls, PangeaSeed SeaWalls and Murals in the Market Detroit. MEGGS also co-founded ‘Temple Children’, a Hilo (Hawai’i) based artist residency which produced public artworks and exhibitions in Hawai’i to engage artists in cross cultural connections and environmental awareness.

MEGGS has held numerous successful solo exhibitions since 2007, most notably with Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne, Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco, Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong and Inner State Gallery in Detroit. MEGGS has exhibited and produced murals in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as internationally within California, Michigan, Texas, Hawai’i, London, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Mexico and India to this date. MEGGS’ artwork has been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) and National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) permanent works on paper collections and are also included in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Museum of Art and History Lancaster, California and the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Indianapolis.

Commercially MEGGS has worked on projects for local Government, private businesses and festivals. He has created artworks for the bands BLINK 182 and PEARL JAM and murals for the Australian Open Tennis, The City of Melbourne, Telstra, Urban Canvas, The East Gippsland Rail Trail, LaTrobe University and Melbourne Airport.
